Therapy
Therapy is a collaborative learning process that seeks for you to better understand yourself and your interactions with others. To guide our work, we will set specific goals for change. Our sessions may include:
The way that we will address your goals will vary depending on your reasons for seeking care. The therapy that I provide is informed by Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamics, Systems Psychology, and Self Psychology. I make use of the research highlighting the most effective ways to work on different issues. For example, the literature is clear that the treatment of choice for OCD is a form of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy which includes Exposure Plus Ritual Prevention (sometimes referred to as Exposure Plus Response Prevention). For depression, research directs us toward a therapy called Behavioral Activation.
My style is one of active involvement. Rather than only sitting quietly and listening, I participate by providing feedback, ideas, suggestions, and plans. I see therapy as a team effort where I work together with my clients.
With some people, therapy is quite brief -- with them reaching their goals in a few sessions. With others, therapy continues beyond the initial sessions as we work on further topics. However, in either case change is generally apparent early on.
It is often helpful for me to work hand-in-hand with other professionals in order to provide the best care. I am in frequent contact with physicians, teachers, and guidance counselors. When medications are needed, I also collaborate with psychiatrists.
Your medical insurance should cover a good portion of therapy. I will be happy to help determine your coverage and to figure out with you how to make it work.
